Ministry
I have been trying to develop principles by which to do biblical, Christ-centered ministry. I have learned quite a bit during my first pastorate, and I am trying to put everything together. Beyond my experiences so far, I am relying on the training, mentoring, and discipleship that I have had along the Way.
Some basics I’ve learned are called the “Heart Attitudes“. I learned them from Dr. Jack Allen, at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Based on Prov. 4:23 “Above all else guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” The 7 Heart Attitudes are:
It’s not JUST about me. Phil 2:4
Live an honest, open lifestyle. Eph 4:25
Lovingly give & humbly recieve correction. Heb. 3:13, Prov. 15:31, 13:18
Clean up relationships. Matt. 5:23-24
Participate in ministry. 1 Peter 4:10
Support the church financially. 2 Cor 9:6, Heb 10:24-25
Follow leaders within biblical boundaries. Heb 13:17
I also want to be passionate about the BASICS. I have read many books, websites, magazines, and blogs about the emerging trends of ministry. I want to make sure the basics are done first, then worry about trendy ministry. Personal, spiritual vitality is essential. Time should be invested in spiritual disciplines, and they should be the cornestone of ministry not on the outskirts. Worship is a priority. Planning, time, and preparation should go into every time together to make every gathering into a worship experience. Outreach and Missions go hand and hand. I believe God will bless me with more opportunity around the block as I share the Way, Truth, and the Life when I am also sharing it around the world. Discipleship is the key to building strong families and strong disciples. We need to take Sunday School to the next level, a Discipleship University in every local association/church.
I have a faith that is active. Any church I am a part of will do the basics of ministry, even if my tithe is what pays for it. There will be water for the thirsty, food for the hungry, and visitation to the lonely and imprisoned.
